The area is rich in x-country skiing opportunities, and snowfall is reliable up this far north. Avid local skiers volunteer their time to prepare the trails in the fall, and then grooming and track setting them after each snow fall. The Millinocket and East Millinocket area has over 45 miles of FREE, track set, backwoods trails. Spectacular views of Mt. Katahdin appear around corners, as do picture perfect vistas of lakes, snowdrifts on driftwood piles, and snow laden braches of trees.

The Bait hole ski area is located on Route II three miles southwest of Millinocket. There are ten miles of trails and loops, with trails for beginners and more advanced skiers.

The North Ridge ski area is one mile southwest of the Bait Hole with a variety of trails.

The Northern Timber Cruisers clubhouse area has 12 miles of groomed trails that lead to a warming hut. It is located I.6 miles north of downtown Millinocket on the Baxter State Park Road.

East Millinocket has 12 miles of beautifully wooded, track set trails in an area that is populated with deer. Access to the trial system is at the east branch Sno-Rovers Clubhouse area, and also behind St. Peter’s Catholic Church.

Backcountry skiing is available is Baxter State Park of those who prefer to blaze their own trails. For the really adventurous, ski into Baxter and stay in a lean-to, a true wilderness experience. Overnight winter use in the park requires advance reservations.
