Representing craftspeople from Maine and all over the world since 1987, we show splendid examples of contemporary pottery, blown glass, wood furniture and accessories, fiber, forged iron, jewelry, paper, and mixed media. Work of more than 100 artists, selected by Gallery owner Sue Wilmot, is on exhibit all summer. Although the Blue Heron is known for its fine collection of functional ceramics, the gallery also features the work of Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and Penland School of Crafts faculty. Carolyn Caldwell Studio 433 South Deer Isle Road, Deer Isle, PO Box 735 Stonington 04681 Phone : 207-348-6099 Carolyn Caldwell is a painter and pastel artist living on Deer Isle, Maine. She studied photography and art and received a degree in Architecture from Boston Architectural Center. She designed houses on St. John in the Virgin Islands for 16 years and returned to painting in 1987, inspired by Winslow Homer’s watercolors of the Bahamas. Her Caribbean work in pastel and watercolor were often busy with people and activity. Since moving to Maine in 2000, she has been increasingly drawn toward quieter and more contemplative images. Working in pastels and oils, she began painting expressive landscapes, reducing them to simpler forms. The result has elevated her subjects to the status of iconic images. Familiar island scenes became less specific, but weighted with universal connotations: the solitary clammer in a broad, darkening cove, a lone island beneath a sky awash in moody clouds. She received a B.F.A. in Painting from Miami University in Ohio and an M.A. in Art Education from Michigan State University. She currently resides in Deer Isle, Maine. In Japan, she explored western painting styles with Michiro Mori and studied Sumi-e (Asian Brush Painting) for 10 years with Grace Yen. She has also studied Sumi-e techniques with Yang Chan, Li Dongfeng, and Leigh Wen. She has exhibited in Japanese venues and galleries since 1973, including the Takumi Gallery, the Mikimoto Pearls Gallery, the Okinawa Civic Center and the International Ocean Exposition in Motubu. She studied with master Impressionist painter and author, Henry Hensche at the Cape School of Art, Provincetown, Massachusetts. She studied portraiture with his oldest student, Betty Warren at her Malden Bridge School of Art, Malden Bridge, N.Y. She began her studies at the Fenway Studios, Boston, Massachusetts drawing from plaster casts in the atelier tradition. Terrell Lester became well known as a Maine Landscape Photographer and his reputation as one of the best has grown over the twenty years the gallery has been in business. He was doing about 30 outdoor art shows a year when that little gallery opened and continued to do that while his wife Ginger ran the gallery at home. The opportunity to move into Deer Isle Village came in about 1993 and the gallery has been there ever since.
