Baxter State Park form the heart of the Katahdin Region and surrounds. Mt. Katahdin, the highest peak in maine. This beautiful “forever wild” Park is one of the best-known landmarks in this region and consists of 204,733 acres of land, Abundant wildlife and plants can be found here. Camping is available in the park, however, reservations are required, There are no commercial activities within the Park borders, so take food and provision with you! There are many scenic and challenging hiking opportunities on tails appropriate for all levels of enthusiasm and agility. Sandy Stream Pond boasts an exceptionally high moose sighting opportunity and is a short and flat hike. Mt. Katahdin itself is a challenging day hike for the hardy and well prepared and boasts excellent views as a reward for meeting the challenge. Mt. Katahdin is the northernmost point of the Appalachian Trail, so expect to see some weary “though hikers” at the end of September.

The Park an be entered from its northern or southern entrance, and driving through the Park from one gate to the other is an all day event. The southern entrance, Togue Pond Gatehouse, is accessed from Millinocket. Take exit 244 off 1-95 in Medway. The northern entrance can be accessed via the Sherman Mills or Island Falls exit 264 off 1-95. It should be noted that the Park has vehicle size restrictions, and does not allow domestic animals.

Gulf Hags :  is known as the Grand Canyon of the east. Your hike begins with a river crossing into Screwauger Falls, which is a spectacular gorge that is almost four miles long. This hike is perfect for families. After the falls the hike becomes a bit more challenging with the rapid drop of the West Branch of the Pleasant River. This creates the gorge and the loop trail that is 8.5 miles long. This hike has waterfall views, chutes, pools and a vertical slate wall 30 to 40 feet deep. Hikers should bring a daypack, bug spray, proper footwear, water, food and a map. Dogs are welcome but must be leased.

The Appalachian Trail : is a well – know hiking trail. It extends 2,143 miles form Springer Mountain in Georgia, to the top of Mt. Katahdin, here in the Katahdin Region of Maine. The trail is well signed throughout its length and beautiful views of ponds, waterfalls, wildlife and plants are feature in this northern most section of the trail. Hiking, camping and fishing are permitted along the Appalachian Trail, except for the Nature Conservancy’s Hermitages tract, Motorized vehicles, bikes, pack animals and horses are prohibited. Open wood fires are allowed at designated campsites. Many short hikes along sections of the Appalachian Trail are accessible from the Millinocket area.
