Many people have a coastal image when thinking about Maine, but the coast is only part of what Maine has to offer its residents and guests. The interior of Maine, with its two lane highways and quaint villages, is often overlooked. Here you will find dozens of parks, recreation areas, nature preserves, trails, and unique natural sites filling Maine's interior, making it a natural treasure. It also has a wealth of history since settlements in Maine date back to the origins of the country.
The Sebago Lake Region has its fill of history too. Long ago, when controlled by the Native Americans, the lake received the name "Sebago" meaning "great stretch of water". Eight miles wide and eleven miles long, Sebago Lake is the second largest lake in Maine and the third largest in New England. Sebago Lake water also feeds the near-by city of Portland due to its exceptional clarity, purity and abundance.
The major towns around the Sebago Lake region are Windham, Standish, Raymond, Casco, Sebago, Naples, Frye Island, Bridgton and Harrison. Many other local settlements exist, but are usually tied to one of the major townships. The largest town is Windham with approximately 15,000 residents and the smallest being Sebago at around 1500*. The early settlements in the Sebago Lake area began in the early 18th century with Windham and ended with Naples in 1774. Town incorporations followed. Much of what caused the development had to do with farming, grist milling, blacksmithing, saw milling, and other wood-related industries. These towns have changed little since their beginnings. Many of the buildings and materials still exist today, making the towns a natural antique shopping destination.
Sebago Lake Region Area Code is 207
