The Maine Dept. of Marine Resources was established to conserve and develop marine and estuarine resources; to conduct and sponsor scientific research; to promote and develop the Maine coastal fishing industries; to advise and cooperate with local, state, and federal officials concerning activities in coastal waters; and to implement, administer, and enforce the laws and regulations necessary for these purposes.

The Maine Legislature created DHA in 2003 as an independent executive agency to arrange for the provision of comprehensive, affordable health care coverage to eligible small employers, including the self-employed, their employees and dependents, and individuals on a voluntary basis. The Legislature specified that DHA is also responsible for monitoring and improving the quality of health care in this State.

The mission of the Division of Infectious Disease is to decrease morbidity and mortality through the prevention and control of infectious disease. The mission is part of a national health care reform initiative and is federally funded.

Division of Licensing and Regulatory Services is responsible for licensing medical and long term care facilities, assisted living, residential care, private non-medical in stitutions, mental health service providers, substance abuse agencies, and programs and services to children. The Division is also responsible for reg ulation of health care facilities and providers under the Certificate of Ne ed Act, the Hospital Cooperation Act and laws pertaining to Continuing Care Retirement Communities.
