DEFFA
DEFFA is a non-profit membership organization whose goal is to promote traditional music and dance and the folk arts. The organization produces a monthly newsletter containing event listings, news, articles, musical and dance transcriptions, and other items of interest to its members, and organizes the annual DEFFA Dance Festival, a weekend long celebration of traditional and folk music, dance, and fellowship held each spring.

We are excited to begin fall classes! We have a terrific line-up of dance school teachers and dance classes for all ages. Dancing With the Stars, Ellsworth star, Kelly Fitzpatrick will be working with all of our children ages 3 to 10 and the teen/adult Jazz Program. Dancing with the Stars, Ellsworth 2010 winner, David LaMon will be teaching "Moving in the Moment" and Lucy Rowe and Anne Ekberg will be returning to their Ballet I, II & III classes.

Maine Ballroom offers on-site individual and group instruction to students of all ages in waltz, foxtrot, tango, rumba, cha cha, swing, and many other dances including Country and Latin Line Dancing. We also offers classes off site to local businesses, adult education programs, high schools, colleges and private groups. Our instructors teach both American and International style ballroom and continue to receive training from leading professionals from throughout North America.

In the Middle East, dance is a way of life. It is not something reserved only for parties or shows; it is an integral part of everyday activity. In order to understand Belly Dance, one must first understand its roots: Raqs Beledi and Raqs Sharqi (rahks BELL uh dee and rahks SHARK ee.) Raqs or raks translates from Arabic to “dance” and is followed by a descriptive such as beledi or sharqi. Beledi translates to “my country” or “my hometown.” Sharqi translates to “of the east.”

Maine State Ballet, established in 1986, has fast become the leading professional dance company in the State of Maine. Under the direction of Artistic Director Linda MacArthur Miele, Maine State Ballet's School for the Performing Arts specializes in ballet, tap, jazz and theater performance. As a non-profit, the school strives to enrich the Maine community through education, outreach and expanded enjoyment of the performing arts.

Maplewood Dance Center is located at 383 Warren Ave in Portland, Maine, just about one mile from exit 8 of the Maine Turnpike. Maplewood was opened in June 1995, by its owners, John and Joan Vance.
