 | Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company & Museum collects, preserves, displays, interprets, and operates historic railroad equipment from Maine’s two-foot-gauge railways for the education and enjoyment of the public. From the 1870s until the 1940s, some 200 miles of narrow gauge lines served the state’s smaller communities. Today, our Museum visitors relive railroading as it once was and come to understand the railroads’ importance to Maine’s economic development. |
| | Maine State Museum Maine was one of the first states to initiate the concept of a state museum, but it took over 120 years to demonstrate that consistent support and proper facilities are vital for success. In 1836 the Maine State Legislature voted funds for a "cabinet or museum of mineral specimens…at the State House in Augusta." Boston geologist Dr. Charles T. Jackson, who conducted the first Geological Survey of Maine, selected specimens of his discoveries for display in 1837. |

| | Penobscot Marine Museum Maine's history of boat- and shipbuilding goes back more than 200 years. In vessels ranging from the bark canoe to the six-masted schooner, the Maine-built boat has been a touchstone of good workmanship and practical yet appealing design. Vessel types whose places or origin are inseparable from their names – like the Jonesport lobster boat, the Lincolnville wherry, the Matinicus double-ender and the Friendship sloop – attest to Maine's boatbuilding renown. |
