The Old York Historical Society, doing business as the Museums of Old York, was founded more than one hundred years ago to preserve the history and artifacts of York, Maine. Originally referred to as Gorgeana, York is one of New England's earliest colonial settlements. It also has the distinction of being the nation's first chartered city (1641) and first incorporated city (1642). Offering thirty-seven period room settings and several galleries housed throughout nine historic museum buildings, the Museums of Old York showcases a wealth of early New England art, architecture, and decorative arts. The exhibits focus on the stories of southern Maine's men, women, and children and the world they created and lived in from the earliest settlement in the 1600s to the present day.

This winter, don't miss the first major survey of paintings by the MacArthur Foundation "genius" award-winning artist Rackstraw Downes (born 1939) in the first major survey of his work Rackstraw Downes: Onsite Paintings, 1972-2008 (through March 20). With more than 30 works, many of them multiple-part canvases, this exhibition features his minutely detailed paintings of exterior and interior panoramic scenes of the American landscapes and urban areas. The exhibition traces the artist's career through major examples of his work that were painted in Maine, Texas, New Jeresy, and New York.

See the beginning of mass transportation from the omnibus to the development of the electric streetcar, and follow the progress to today's buses, light rail vehicles, and rapid transit cars. Our collection contains vehicles from almost all major cities in the United States that had streetcar systems, as well as from other cities across the globe, to provide samples of how generations past moved about for work, school and leisure and to show the dedicated craftsmanship put forth to construct these workhorse vehicles.
