Downeast Friendship Sloop Charters offers a unique sailing experience aboard a Friendship Sloop- the original lobster boat! These sail powered vessels were built in Maine in the late 1800’s as working lobster boats and have remained popular because of their beauty and seaworthy nature. The Alice E. was built in 1899 and remains as the oldest working Friendship sloop today. While visiting Bar Harbor, escape the crowds and enjoy the Quietside of Acadia National Park. We offer private charters and shared sails in some of the world’s best sailing grounds. Cruises depart from Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor, just 15 – 20 minutes from Bar Harbor.

Jock Williams has been around boats all his life – probably a lot like you. As a teenager growing up on Martha’s Vineyard, he spent his summers working in a marine store, running a fuel dock, operating a launch service, and learning to be a rigger. At fifteen, he bought his first sailboat and was soon an avid participant in local day races and, a little later, ocean racing. He has skippered a contender in the Bermuda Race and crewed in six additional Bermuda Races. Jock has also competed in two transatlantic races, the TransPac, and almost every major ocean race in the Northeast. A 1962 graduate of Colby College, Jock went on to Naval Officer Candidate School and was subsequently assigned to a U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey ship charting the South China Sea for vessels in the Vietnam War. Later, he was stationed at the U.S. Naval Academy Sailing Office in Annapolis, and served as varsity sailing coach.

Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors produces an award-winning print magazine, an online edition filled with original content, and an annual boat and home show during the second weekend in August, each with a focus on the unique lifestyle that is living, working, and cruising the coast of Maine. Now located in Rockland, Maine, the company was founded in Camden, Maine, in 1987 by publisher John K. Hanson, Jr. Our products demonstrate that the Maine coast is more than just magnificent scenery. It is rugged (and sometimes quirky) people, rich history, traditional boats (and modern ones too), great architecture, and good food. No other magazine covers the coast of Maine the way we do--our emphasis on boats with lovely sheerlines holds universal appeal.
