Oxford had a library of sorts as far back as 1873. Freeland Holmes left Oxford in 1849 to go to San Francisco as an "argonaut" and businessman. In 1870 he passed away in Oxford and bequeathed a fund of $500 to be matched by the town to purchase books and establish a library. It was located in an area of the George H. Jones Drug Store on Pleasant Street. It was there, in the back of the store, that the books were kept for circulation. The library existed there for 40 years.

The small granite building that now houses the Hamlin Memorial Library was built in 1822 to house the Oxford County Jail. The jail, the jailer's house next door, the County Courthouse and the Registry of Deeds, now private homes, continued to operate as county government buildings until the 1890's, when the County Seat was moved to South Paris to be near the train station.Dr. Augustus Choate Hamlin, a nephew of Hannibal Hamlin, Vice President during Lincoln's first term, purchased the old jail, and in 1902 deeded it to the Paris Hill Library Association to be a library and museum. The downstairs now serves as a library and the upstairs as a museum. The museum has on display items belonging to the Hamlin family, (Hannibal Hamlin was born in the house next door to the library,) old jail artifacts, as well as items of historical interest donated by Paris Hill families throughout the century.

WATERFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY
663 Waterford Road, P.O. Box 176, Waterford 04088
Phone : 207-583-2050 Email : wla@waterford.lib.me.us
Prior to 1899, the Ladies Sewing Circle of Waterford carried on a lending library at the Knight store, run by Sarah and Carrie Knight. In 1899, the Circle incorporated as the Ladies Library Association of Waterford, electing Sarah Knight as its first librarian. Three years later, Mrs. Florence Rounds was elected assistant librarian. Interest in the library grew and more room was needed for books. The Knight sisters began construction of a stone building on the front of their lot, but both died only a few weeks apart in August 1911. In 1912 the old association turned its property over to the newly formed Waterford Library Association. Mrs. Rounds was chosen as the new librarian and she appointed Miss Charlotte Morse (Fillebrown) as her assistant librarian.

WEST PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY
226 Main Street, PO Box 307, West Paris 04289
Phone : 207-674-2004 Email : bstevwpl@westparis.lib.me.us
The West Paris Library Association was established in 1889 and was housed in various locations until the present library was completed in 1926. The library is a unique building, built of native stones gathered from nearby fields and pastures, it was built in the style of medieval England, like a tiny stone castle. The late Lewis M Mann made a provision in his will for the erection of this building and also left for that purpose the land on which it stands. Above the original oak door with hand forged iron hinges is a large granite slab with the inscription Arther E Mann Memorial Library. The library was officially acquired by the Town of West Paris in 1971. The building has been accepted into the Register for Historic Places by the Maine Historical Preservation Commission. The library continually updates its collection of books to serve the community of West Paris and surrounding towns.
ZADOC LONG FREE LIBRARY
5 Turner Street, PO Box 158, Buckfield 04220
Phone : 207-336-2171 Email : zadoc@zadoc.lib.me.us
The Zadoc Long Free Library was a gift to the people of Buckfield by Secretary of the Navy John Davis Long and built as a memorial to his father and mother, Zadoc Long and Julia Temple Davis. John had thought often of providing a library for his native town of Buckfield and in the summer of 1900 he formulated definite plans for the realization of his contemplated project. He enlisted the help of his friend and Architect John Calvin Stevens to design the building. The following year the building was erected and Mr. Long and his relatives liberally supplied it with books, some of which will soon be in a special collection at the library. The library was dedicated at the "Old Church on the Hill" during Buckfield's Old Home Week on August 17, 1901. The Library houses many interesting items, some being "The King's Arm" a musket used during the French and Indian War and has been fired every 4th of July since the news of The Declaration of Independence reach Pembroke, Massachusetts; A Cival War Drum; and Portraits of the Long Family. The library is currently in the proccess of archiving many items of historical signifigance including Long Family documents, 23rd Maine Regimental records, a Special Collection of Books that were originally donated by the Long Family, as well as other documents of local history.
