Healthy Oxford Hills (HOH) is a community coalition operating as a Healthy Maine Partnership. The Healthy Maine Partnerships (HMPs), funded primarily by the Master Tobacco Settlement are mandated to build coalitions and partnerships locally to improve nutrition and physical activity and to fight tobacco, alcohol and other drug abuse.Healthy Oxford Hills was started in 2000, and we are in our 7th year of working on community health issues. The new cycle of state funding has mandated HMPs to become more comprehensive in our scope and to begin to provide community education and prevention services not only for nutrition, physical activity, tobacco and other substances that are abused but to support self-management of additional chronic diseases, including diabetes, cancer and lung diseaseses, asthma and dementia.

Born April 27th, 1964 in Melrose Park, Illinois, Marty started his training in traditional Japanese karate in 1976. Continuing his training it was not until 1985 that Marty started his training in Kyokushin Karate in Orlando Florida under the guidance of Sensei James Swanson (died 2005). Receiving his Shodan (1st degree black belt) in December 1988 Marty went on to train as a kickboxer and worked as a professional sparring partner for WBC Heavyweight Champ of the World (1984-1986) Pinklon Thomas.Marty moved to Maine in 1993 and in January 1995 opened his first dojo (karate school) in Norway and has been teaching full time since that time.Marty has fought in two world tournaments (held every 4 years in Japan) twice and was the promoter of the first Kyokushin World Tournament (World Cup) in Lewiston Maine in 2002. Marty has brought up several fighters, few to the championship level and continues to train but no longer competes in the full contact arena.

Fare Share Co-op began in the early 1970’s as West Paris Co-op (or Goat Co-op), a group of families who gathered monthly in a member’s barn to jointly pre-order cases of produce and staples. Membership grew and more pre-order groups were established, until in 1978, two storefront co-ops were opened: one in Bethel and one in South Paris. The one in South Paris became known as Fare Share Co-op. A coordinator was hired and membership levels were instituted. The Co-op incorporated in 1978 as Oxford Hills Food and Nutrition Exchange, Inc., a non-profit corporation in the State of Maine.
